Department Of Microbiology

The undergraduate program was started with 30 students . The department was inaugurated by Dr. Sunithi Solomon, Director, AIDS Control Society of Tamilnadu in 1997. The post graduate program was started in 2006. The field of Microbiology requires continuous updation and upgradation and the department strives hard to provide the same to the students.

The course comprises of different branches of Microbiology like General Microbiology, Medical Microbiology, Food Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Soil Microbiology and Environmental Microbiology. The course also possesses Immunology, Molecular biology and application oriented subjects like Bioinstrumentation, Computer Application, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology. The curriculum is frequently updated, with consent from Board of Studies and suggestions from Academic Audit, conducted once in three years, so that the students can pursue their higher studies with ease. The curriculum also aids the student in appearing for competitive examinations like NET, SET, ICMR. The hands on training during practical hours make them skillful, in job oriented laboratory practices.

Microfest is the annual association meet conducted by the department that showcases the talents of both students of Ethiraj College and other Colleges, in Academic and Co Curricular competitions. Our Annual Department Journal, Micron, is released during this event. Micron portrays the zeal of our students in writing articles, crosswords, quiz and designing cartoons and themes. Our Department has organized various conferences, workshops, seminars, guest lectures and has signed MOU with Clinbiocare Technology LLP, Chennai.

The Department also organizes Certificate Course/Add on Course namely Medical Laboratory technology/Herbs and Home Remedies, for the betterment of Students’ career. To kindle the quest in Research Activities, students are encouraged to take up Ethiraj College Management funded Summer Research Project, in their final year of under graduation. UG and PG students are encouraged to take up Internships during summer holidays. To establish Social awareness among students, they are motivated to participate in extension activities.
