About the department:
The Department of Commerce (self-supporting) was started in June 1981 with an initial strength of 70 students. With the pressing demand for the course, one more batch with an additional strength of 70 students came into exercise in 1984-85. In order to meet the ever-growing demands for the course in the new millennium, the department has introduced a third batch of 70 students in the year 2016-17. The UG programme assures professional education of immense value by equipping the students with adequate knowledge in various facets of commerce so as to enable them to emerge as business leaders.
The department has been upgraded to a post-graduate department in the year 2016-17 in order to equip the students for the teaching profession and research programmes and enable them to face the challenges of the corporate sector and occupy administrative positions.
The programme provides an in-depth knowledge in the key areas of accounting, finance, research and taxation. As a value addition, students are given opportunity to undergo one and a half months internship training to gain hands on the experience in the corporate sector.
The curriculum provides ample scope for creative thinking and participative learning through discussions, seminars, case studies, class assignments and field visits. The department has also entered into a MoU with the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance.
The curriculum has met the expectations of the corporate world as a large number of young, enterprising graduates are able to find suitable placements in reputed organizations.
The department also conducts a two day annual association programme COMET (COMmerce EThiraj) where events like adzap, pot pourri, business plan, debate and stock trading are organized both at the inter collegiate and inter class level. To tap the journalistic skills in the students, a journal on relevant themes is brought out every year.
To add to the good will of the department, students have excelled in extracurricular activities and sports events conducted both at inter department and inter collegiate level. The department has had a reputation of winning the freshers’ talent meet “Aarambh” and the inter departmental cultural fest “Maithri” consecutively for considerable number of years.
Student are also actively participative in the extension activities such as Rotract club , RRC , CCC E-cell, Enactus etc.
