STUDENTS LEAGUE

INCEPTION – 18.03.2016

On the occasion of the 125th birth centenary celebrations (2015-2016) of our revered founder, Thiru.V.L.Ethiraj, 8 student leagues had been formed with 125 students as members of the organizing committee. The 8 student leagues were inaugurated during the inaugural function of the colosseum in Campus –II on 18.03.2016. Each of the league is headed by one third year student, selected from the students who contested and did not win the union elections for the year 2016-2017. The goal of forming the 8 student leagues is to involve more number of students to render service/support in the administration/smooth functioning of the college, thereby giving them the opportunity to hone their administrative skills, human relation skills, communication skills, leadership skills, team coordination, creativity etc.,

ALUMNAE CONNECT LEAGUE

Project 1 : Immediately, after completion of founder’s day celebration on July 18th,2016, a short e-mail report of the celebrations along with details of Alumnae account no. with IFSC code for contributions from Alumnae, was sent to about 1000 Alumnae, using database of the Placement officer.

Project 2 : Spoken English classes for interested students from aided stream, was handled by Alumna of English department Mrs.Premalatha. It was conducted for 10 days, starting from 19th August 2016 (Timing- 1.45 to 3.15 p.m, Venue - room no : 109 ).

Project 3 : Alumnae Connect league functioned as the registration committee on the ECAA day (Ethiraj College Alumnae Association), and processed the registration forms. The league also Conducted games for the Alumnae, on that day, and co-ordinated with the Alumnae to put up stalls wherein they displayed their products like readymade garments, jute bags etc,.

CAMPUS INNOVATIONS LEAGUE

PROJECT 1: LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP:

The first project was a Leadership Workshop, conducted by The Palkhivala Foundation, Nani-Palkhivala Arbitration Centre (NPAC) in association with Forum of Free Enterprise, Mumbai jointly with Ethiraj College for Women on the 6th and 7th of August 2016, from 9 AM to 4 PM. 37 students from various colleges of the city participated, out of which 19 students were from our college. In this workshop, the students were enlightened about the various aspects that make a good leader. Unlike other such talks, this camp was self-motivational and made participants question everything around them, including and especially themselves.

PROJECT 2: WALL PAINTING

In order to add colour to the campus, the Campus Innovations League 2016-17 set to paint the walls of the college campus. A total of 12 students were involved and the walls opposite to the Aavin Parlour and 5° were whitewashed and painted with scenes of nature and silhouettes.

PROJECT 3 : CONDUCT OF WORKSHOPS

Two final year students, who had expertise in jewellery making and calligraphy, were recognized by the League. The identified students facilitated the jewellery making and calligraphy workshop conducted on the 21st and 22nd February, 2017. The aim was to enable students to develop the skills in these aspects. A total of 27 students attended the workshops and benefitted from them Students carried home their finished, self-made products.

PROJECT 4 : PUBLICATION OF RESEARCH JOURNAL

To encourage the scientific quest for knowledge and learning, the Campus Innovations League of Ethiraj College has invited research articles from the UG, PG and M.Phil students of all streams, for publication in the Journal “CATALYST”, with an ISBN number for the current academic year 2016-17. A double blind review will be carried out and the best articles will be published. The journal will be released in the beginning of the next academic year (2017-2018) during Union Inaugural.

DISASTER MITIGATION LEAGUE

Project 1: AWARENESS WORKSHOP

Awareness workshop on "Disaster Management “was conducted on 4th August, 2016 from 12:00pm to 01:30 pm by Dr.Muthukrishnan, .Ph.D and Mrs.Jeya,Deputy Manager, Specialist of Tamilnadu State Disaster Management Agency. Around 180 students from Aided and Self-Supporting Stream attended the program. This workshop was conducted to create awareness among the students on Disaster Management. Thus, through this workshop the students learnt how to save themselves during emergencies like earthquake, floods, fire and first aid. Doubts raised by the students during the interactive session were clarified by the experts. Thus the students were highly benefited from this session.

Project 2: MOCK FIRE DRILL

“Mock Fire Drill was conducted on 5th October, 2016 and 28 feb 2016 by Mr. Rajesh Kannan, Joint Director of Indian Fire Service and his team. About 25 fire fighters of Fire and Rescue Department of the Tamilnadu government demonstrated on how to fight fire in case of emergencies. This drill was conducted separately for Self-Supporting and aided students. Around 1000 students attended the fire drill.Students were divided into 6 teams namely:-

1.Fire Fighting Team which alerts the whole college for safe exit in case of emergency.

2.Evacuation Team which evacuates all to a destination in an orderly manner.

3.Search and Rescue Team which quickly searches and rescues injured people.

4.Fire Fighting Team which controls the fire.

5.First Aid Team which treats the injured persons.

6.Transport Management Team which arranges for ambulance.

Students were taught to extinguish fire using fire extinguishers. They were allowed to handle extinguishers. They were also taught how to rescue injured people without equipments. Few of such techniques are baby carry, fire man lift, pick up a back etc,. The drill thus conducted by Indian Fire Service was highly beneficial to the students in terms of handling fire in case of any emergency and safeguarding themselves and the people around. Students gained from the immense knowledge and practical training imparted during the session.

GREEN ENVIRO LEAGUE

PROJECT 1: TRIBUTE TO Dr. A.P.J ABDUL KALAM

As its maiden venture, the league commemorated the first death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India on 27thJuly, 2016 by planting 52 tree saplings in Campus II of Ethiraj College for Women by the Principal Dr. A.NIRMALA, Vice-Principal (Aided) Dr. POORNIMA NAYAK, Vice-Principal (Self Supporting) Dr. MARAGATHAVALLI, Heads of the Departments, Faculty Members, Student Union Members, Association Secretaries and Students of Ethiraj College For Women.

PROJECT 2:TREE PLANTING-AN INITIATIVE AFTER VARDAH CYCLONE

The Green Enviro League and CSS together in an attempt to improve the natural environment, conserve and to sustain an ecological balance after the recent Vardah cyclone which left behind a trail of destruction decided to increase the green cover of the institution. Our esteemed Chief Guest, Chairman, Vice-Principal [Aided and Self Supporting], Faculty Members and Students of the Ethiraj family, planted saplings to mark the humble beginning of a greener pasture.

HOLISTIC WELL-BEING LEAGUE

PROJECT 1: HEARTFULLNESS MEDITATION

Heartfulness institute is a non-profit organization which offers meditation as a tool for self-development. The objective of the course was to enable students to use meditation as an essential life skill that can be practiced in one’s own daily life for the pursuit of inner excellence. The course methodology includes short talks focusing on the importance and benefits of meditation followed by meditation session

Heartfulness meditation workshop was completed for Self-supporting students and Aided students from 4th July to 8th August 2016 - free of cost.The students were given a notepad in which they would write the feedback after each session. The session included 30minutes of presentation and 20minutes of meditation and 20minutes of relaxation and question-answer session.After getting the feedback from the students it was found that the girls have benefitted a lot after attending the meditation workshop. There were 50 students who successfully completed the course, handled by 24 trainers from the Heartfulness Meditation Centre.

VIPASANA MEDITATION WORKSHOP

PROJECT 2: LECTURE CUM MEDITATION

It was planned to continue meditation at an advanced level for the next project for self-development for the final year students. Professionals from various fields were called to give a presentation on personality development and how it can be improved by practicing meditation. The speakers also addressed the students based on their experience of the benefits of practicing meditation. Students also requested sessions on topics such as Leadership, Decision making, Communication, Stress management, Soft Skills, Concentration, Career Planning, Good Health, etc. The program was from August 29th to September 31st, 2016 handled by 20 professionals drawn from various fields like medical practitioners, soft skill trainers and so on.

LECTURE CUM MEDITATION

PROJECT 3: YOGA

The third project included inculcating the students with the various easy-to-do yet useful yoga asanas, coordinating with Krishnamachari Yoga Kendra.A well-trained professional Mrs.Muneeshwari helped the students in teaching them basic asanas such as Trikonasana, Dhanurasana, Surya Namaskar, BaddhaKonasana, Sirasasana, Sarvangasana, paschimottanasana, Halasana, Bhujangasana, Vajrasana, Balasana, Matsyendrasana, ustrasana, Vrikshasana, Chakrasana, Salabhasana, Gomukhasana and SuptaVirasana

The asanas were basic so that they can be practiced daily at their homes. The girls were asked to bring their own yoga mats or normal mats for learning yoga in college. The duration of the course was 10 days from 16th February to 3rd of March 2017.

PROJECT 4: ZUMBA

Zumba is a dance fitness program. Demo class was conducted in college by Zumba trainer Miss. Kanishka from Pink Fitness Studio. Nearly 50 students participated in the program and learnt the basics of Zumba on 14th March,2017.

In association with: GOONJ Foundation an NGO, stationery items, paper materials and clothes was collected from 2nd to 8th aug.,2016. The collected materials were segregated into family kits, stationery kits and educational kits and were given to the GOONJ Foundation an NGO for a social cause.

Avvai Home, Adyar Students belonging to grade 6 – 8 were taught spoken English and were also encouraged to participate in events where in their fluency in English were tested to help and strengthen their learning process from 16th august to 16th October,2016.

Eye makeup and PaniPuri stalls were put up during Arambh and Maithri from 22nd to 24th august,2016 and the profits generated from the stalls were donated for a social cause.

PROJECT 8: WORKSHOP ON WOMEN AND LAW

The workshop was conducted in the mini auditorium to create awareness among the students about women and law wherein 90 students actively participated in the activities of the workshop on febraury 24th ,2017.

SRISTHI 2016-17 is an intercollegiate fest which involves active participation from colleges all over Chennai and the responsibility of cleanliness maintenance was upon our league members-on 3rd and 4th march,2017.

PROJECT 1 : CLASSROOM BEAUTIFICATION AND AWARENESS POSTERS

The classrooms were beautified by thought -provoking charts, artwork etc making it lively and colorful. Handmade cleanliness awareness posters were made by the students depicting various messages with regard to cleanliness.

PROJECT 2: YOUTH AND ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME

Speakers- Mr. ArunKrishnamoorthy, social and environmental activist from Environ Foundation of India and Mr. Indra Kumar, President, Home EXNORA created awareness among the students on sustainable environment protection and environment cleanliness. On 2/9/2016 The objective of the programme was to motivate the students to keep their surroundings green and clean.

Benefits

The students benefitted a lot from this programme that aimed at sensitizing the students to keep their surrounding clean and not to throw waste in public places as they choke drains and sewers, causing water logging.

Competitions

Various competitions were conducted on this day like Short Film contest, Poster Designing, Power Point Presentations and Photo Story contest. Trophies, certificates and cash prizes were awarded to the winners.

PROJECT 5:PAPER BAGS IN RESTROOMS

During the month of November, 2016 The students of the league made paper bags and inside each paper bag were a bunch of brown covers used to dispose the sanitary napkins. These paper bags are hung inside each washroom to facilitate the students to dispose the sanitary napkins neatly.

PROJECT 6:MOTIVATIONAL MOVIE- “MURDER OF CLEANLINES"

A motivational movie titled "Murder of cleanliness" was screened in the assembly of both Aided and Self-Supporting streams. This movie depicts interview with housekeeping staff, measures taken by the students to clean and maintain the campus, oath by the members of Swachh Ethiraj, etc. This movie was also circulated in CD format to various departments,for viewing by their students.

On 1/3/2017 an amount of Rs. 7000 was spent in purchasing and installing the dustbins in the college premises from Swachh Ethiraj Students League Sponsorship collection.

DAILY & WEEKLY ACTIVITIES

Regular checking of washrooms and inspection of campus cleanliness

Everyday the students were made to check the washrooms and sign the ‘work done sheets” stuck on the washroom door. The campus is also inspected by the students at regular intervals. As a part of the inspection activity, students are provided with “Inspection check list” to make a note of the places that need to be cleaned on a regular basis. This is forwarded to the cleaning staff through the Dean of Students, Vice Principal and Administration Officer.

WEBSITE LEAGUE

The website league functions to improve the college website. The main objective of the league is to furnish in the website all relevant details and updated information of all happenings in the college. There were two projects that were conducted in the current period (2016-2017).

The redesigning work on the website started in the month of May, 2016, through a series of brain storming sessions along the college Chairman, Mr. V.L. Murilidharan and the Principal Dr. A. Nirmala.
