E-CELL

E- SQUARE

E-cell was started in 2007-2008 with Ethiraj College becoming a member of NATIONAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP NETWORK (NEN) in collaboration with STANFORD UNIVERSITY, IIM (A), HARWARD BUSINESS SCHOOL, IIT (BOMBAY), BITS PILANI and S.P. JAIN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT

“E-Square” the E-cell of Ethiraj College aims at nurturing the students and moulds them into bright business minds by offering workshops, speaker sessions and competitions. In the year 2014-2015 the E-cell conducted 22 certificate courses like screen printing- manual and DTP, mural art, cosmetology, terra cotta jewellery making, glass painting, etc with the idea of enabling the student to start their own ventures using the skills acquired from the courses.

The year 2013-2014 also saw young entrepreneurs budding out of their seeds. E-cell of Ethiraj kindled the entrepreneurial spirit within students and assisted them in every move in setting up their venture. E-Square has seen the growth of 7 successful start-ups run by the students of the prestigious commerce department of both general and Honors streams under the guidance of Dr. A. S. Saranya (Aided Stream) and Ms. Sudeshna.T (Self-Supporting Stream)

5 DEGREES

Seven aspiring Ethirajians exploited the opportunity and started this partnership firm called “5 Degrees”—an Aavin cum confectionery outlet during the year 2013-2014. The parlour offers a variety of flavoured milks, ice creams, milk sweets and a wide range of by products like butter, ghee, etc. “ 5 Degrees” was taken over by a group of 8 (juniors to the original founders) and is being successfully run by them. This year, they have broadened their customer base, by extending their services to hostel of our college, and have deepened their range of products by introducing the “Softy Ice Cream” machine, to cater to the customers in the Annexe Block of the campus. It has also been able to cater to the different needs of the college, like providing refreshments during different Department Associations and Fests. 5 Degrees even put up a stall during Srishti’15, and introduced their new venture - the Softy Ice Cream during the fest.

ALTITUDE

One other campus venture was initiated by four students, who came up with the idea of transforming their learning into a venture. This initial thought soon turned into Altitude, an on campus printing unit. They design and print visiting cards, certificates, invitations and greeting cards at reasonable prices. Started in 2014, this campus venture continues to be a successful unit.

OTHER START-UPS

Start ups that emerged the previous year, like “Panache” – a t-shirt printing wing, “Variete Boutique- Your Fashion Destination” – apparels and accessories boutique, “Sri’s Quillies” and “Tillverka” – customized quilling accessories, continue to be a pride of the E-Square activities and ventures.

The various activities of E-Cell included attending various workshops conducted by NEN at Sri Ramachandra Medical College, and a Development meet by NEN at College of Engineering, Guindy. The celebration of “E-Week” from 16th February to 21st February marks the drive to bring awareness of Entrepreneurship in and around the campus

2. SEVA MELA>

The HR Department had organised a ‘Seva’, in collaboration with many NGOs. It provided an opportunity to the students of E-Square to set up stalls for the benefit of the NGOs, which was well received. Around 10 stalls, including many food stalls, 5 Degrees & Variete Boutique stalls, accessories, nail art, mehendi etc. were put up, a percentage of the profits being donated to the NGOs.

4. PARTICIPATION IN VARIOUS NEN WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS

Students attended workshops in Sri Ramachandra University and in Anna University which gave them an outline on the working of National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN).

In Anna University, students interacted with NEN functionaries on the ways to improve the functioning of NEN and their association with different E Cell groups across Chennai.

In Sri Ramachandra Medical College, the participants were given a chance to brainstorm their ideas through various activities and games like mock E Cells. There were sessions which included a pep talk from budding entrepreneurs to inspire the students, sessions on the perks of being a self-made person etc.

5. STALLS FOR OLD STUDENTS ASSOCIATION

Every year, our college conducts an OSA meeting for the alumni of the college and every year, members of E-Square get an opportunity to bring life to their innovative ideas by putting up stalls for the same. This year, 5 Degrees has reached its pinnacle by supplying around 800 ice creams for the alumni meet. Apart from this, many other stalls like food stalls, quilling units etc. had also been put up successfully.

6. JOINTURE

E-Square had also conducted a game called ‘Jointure – a game of Connections’ for various departments. It was a game that was based on a person’s ability to connect the dots and arrive at the right solution. There were various rounds such as guess the personality, guess the company based on their advertisements and their renowned products etc. It had good response as many students had participated and enjoyed the game.

7. LOGO QUIZ
