AIDED DEPARTMENTS

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

Department Achievements:

The Departments of English and Tamil jointly organized a national conference on “Contextualising Asian Literatures” in March 2018. The National Conference on contextualising Asian literatures was held from 21st – 23rd March 2018. It was inaugurated by His Excellency Hyung, Tae Kim, Consul General, Consulate General of the Republic of Korea. The sessions focused on Translation Studies, the difficulties in capturing the essence of the primary text and the developments in the field --particularly the rise in translations of Tamil writers, several issues limiting women in their everyday life, the importance of context in Asian literatures and the impact of literature when widely available.

Department Activities:

2014 – 15

The events of the Post Graduate and Research Department of English for the year 2014-15 commenced with the Oratorical and Essay Competition on 3rd July 2014 to commemorate the Founder’s Day. Sangeetha B of Plant Biology and Plant Bio Technology won the oratorical competition and delivered her speech on the topic held on Founder’s Day.

Annu Subramanium, a renouned NRI writer and social activist addressed our students about her recent launch Another Heaven. Department of English reached another milestone with the inauguration of the Book Club of Ethiraj College on 4th September 2014.

On 25th September the Department in association with ELTAI (an affiliate of IATEFL, UK) organised an International workshop on virtual learning for Teachers. The Department invited a galaxy of budding poets from Prakriti Foundation.

The Department also organised two workshops in association with Chennai Literary Association. Workshops on Theatre and Script Writing were conducted.

On 4th February 2015, an inter-class quiz competition was conducted by the English Department in which III BA English (Aided) .The Professor Tmt. Sita Udupa Endowment lecture was held on 10th February 2015. Dr. Swarnalatha Associate Professor of |English, IIT Madras delivered the endowment lecture on “Environment and Literature” and released the sixth edition of the Scholastic International Research Journal of Language and Literature.

2015-2016

The events of the Post Graduate and Research Department of English for the year 2015-16 commenced with the Oratorical and Essay Competition on 11th July 2015 to commemorate the Founder’s Day. N. J. Subhashruthi of B.Com (Honours) Department won the oratorical competition and delivered her speech on the topic Empowerment of Women-Vision of a Legend held on Founder’s Day. Varshini Venkatesh of II B.com (Aided) Department won the essay competition written on the topic Enlightenment and Empowerment- A visionary’s Dream.

The Department’s Literary Association, Athena’15-16 was conducted on 12th and 13th of January 2016, with the theme, ‘Tribal Literature’. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. M. D. Muthukumaraswamy, Director of National Folklore Support Centre (NFSC) who delivered the inaugural speech. Students from over twenty colleges in and around Chennai actively participated in the events and competitions held. The highlights of the programme were a tribal presentation by the students that revealed the theme of the event, a highly competitive annual inter-class Creative Interpretation and Dramatics, Debate and Quiz held simultaneously at two different venues within the college campus, followed by Act-a-Thorn, Poetry Slam, Stress Interview and Connexions. B.A. English (Aided) secured the first place in Dramatics and B.A ECS (Self-Supporting) got the first place in Creative Interpretation. We also had the pleasure of some eminent personalities such as, Mrs. Aarabi Veeraraghavan, Mr. Sudharasan, VJ Rio Raj, Mr. Gopalan, Mr.Curt, Mr. Prem Sankhar, Mr. Harikumar to judge our famous events mentioned above.

On Feburary 17th 2016, an inter-class quiz competition was conducted by the English Department in which Sanjana Ganesh and Aasifa Rahamath of IIIB.A. English (Aided) and Shruthi and Swetha of II B.A. ECS (Self-Supporting) secured the first place.

The Professor Tmt. Sita Udupa Endowment lecture was held on 16th March 2016. Dr. B.C. Archana Kalyani,I.F.S., Director of Tribal Welfare, Tamil Nadu, delivered the Endowment lecture on ‘The importance of Tribal welfare to preserve the Ecological welfare’ and released the annual edition of the students’ magazine ‘Scrambler’.

Book club of Ethiraj College which was inaugurated on 19th August 2015 followed by periodical meetings and lectures given by professors of the English department to fine tune the strategies on reading. Book club members also actively participated and co-ordinated various events at the Chennai Literary Festival.

The Department of English in collaboration with the Chennai Literary Association had organized two workshops at the regional level on “Tribal Literature” and “Copy Editing” on the 18th February, 2016. Dr.Prabhu, Assistant Professor of English, Thiruthani Government Arts College, Ms. Nallini, Director of Emerald Publishers and Ms.Soumi Sinha Ray , Copy Editor, were the resource persons for the workshops. The workshops were a grand success with more than 150 participants from the city colleges.

The valedictory of Chennai Literary Festival was held in Ethiraj College on the 19th February 2016. The chief guests of the event Mr.V.M.Muralidharan, Chairman, Ethiraj College Trust and Dr. Mariazeena Johnson, MD, Sathyabama University, had felicitated the prize winners of various events conducted in connection with the three day CLF ’16 third edition.

Dr.J.Mangayarkarasi of the Department represented as Indian Associate Member (ELTAI) in the 50th IATEFL Annual International Conference at Birmingham, UK.

2016 -17

The events of the Post Graduate and Research Department of English for the year 2016-17 commenced with the Oratorical and Essay Competition on July 2016 to commemorate the Founder’s Day. Durga Harilal, BBA won the oratorical competition and delivered her speech on the topic held on Founder’s Day.

The Department had an interface with the renowned and bestselling author writer Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni. She addressed our students and the public about recent launch Before We Visit the Goddess.

The Professor Tmt. Sita Udupa Endowment lecture was held on 6th February 2017. Dr. M.S. Nagarajan, Professor & Head (Retd) delivered the Endowment lecture on “Towards Writing a Literary History of Indian Fiction in English”.

The Department also conducted inter-class Quiz on 21st February; students of II MA won the first place.

The Department also organised two workshops in association with Chennai Literary Association on Copy editing and Expressive Arts.

Dr.J.Mangayarkarasi of the Department has been nominated by ELTAI to represent as Indian Associate Member and to present the proceedings of Shakespeare featival held in different parts of India in the forth coming 51st IATEFL Annual International Conference at Glasgow, UK.
